I create batik fabrics, tapestries, and furniture accessories, including lamps, pillows, and wall pieces.
My fascination with the batik process stems from the balance of control vs. chaos. The unexpected results and accidents are what keep me engaged. Batik, much like life, is often a series of accidents and coincidences. For as much control as I have over my intended results, there are always variances that become the true soul and beauty of the piece.
This same balance can also be found in nature. The fluidity of organic shapes and forms, and the uniqueness created by a process to which you must turn over control, and let the pieces themselves become what they will. For every intended shape and color, something unexpected and beautiful can and will occur.
Nature and art can be seen as one in the same; in both, patterns and order can be found in what seem at first to be randomness. The elegance of a simple yet effective design directly relates to it’s function. Making functional art pieces is my way of embracing the beauty of design in objects that we use in our everyday lives.
My work in batik is a combination of traditional techniques using modern materials and nontraditional imagery. This contrast of old mixed with new creates a result that encompasses my love for the environment, for other cultures, and for the importance I place on art and it’s influence on our lives.
Biography: I am a graduate of The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA.
My main focus was drawing and printmaking. I also studied: film, video, performance, painting, sculpture, electronic music, and batik.
Since finishing school I've been working with elementary school children in several afterschool and summer programs, teaching arts, crafts, and environmental activities.
I also spent a year or so managing a custom lighting shop where I gained much experience in; fabrication, restoration, woodworking, finishing, and electrical wiring.
I believe all of this experience has contributed to my art making in some form or another. I feel like I'm finally at a point where I have the knowledge, the skills, and the experience to take my creations to the next level.
I have decided that direction is interior furtniture accesories such as lamps, lanterns, throw pillows, tapestries, and other custom wall pieces.
